CANINE GOOD CITIZEN
CLASS OPTIONS

The American Kennel Club (AKC) offers several Canine Good Citizen (CGC) level options for both awards and titles.

All pure breed and mixed-breed dogs are eligible for these CGC options.

For dogs involved in a PWDS class, there is no additional charge to take a CGC level test indicated in the particular class series description.
(Handlers who pass the CGC test may choose to send their paperwork in for additional formalized certification and title acknowledgement to the AKC for a minimal fee noted on the AKC paperwork).

CGC Options can be found in the following PWDS classes:

CGC - Canine Good Citizen
This test is part of PWDS class offering: Obedience 101 / BasicReview the test items here.

CGCA - Canine Good Citizen Community Canine - Where the CGC items are based in a 'classroom' environment, the 10 items for the AKC Community Canine test are based on 'real life situations' like walking on a busy sidewalk, or through a local park, walking around a visually-blocked corner, giving you and your dog the confidence to enjoy everyday to the fullest, no matter what comes your way. This test is part of PWDS class offering: Obedience 201 / Advanced. Review the test items here.

CGCU - Canine Good Citizen Urban - The AKC Canine Good Citizen Urban test requires that the dog demonstrates they are well-behaved and well-trained in a setting that includes traffic, crowds, noises, smells, and other distractions that are present in a city or town. This 10-step public access skills test occurs in an active city or town setting where there are cars, streets to be crossed, noises, and fast-paced distractions. (Although this is a public access test, the CGCU is not to be confused with or used in place as a general service dog public skills access test.) Review the test items here.

AKC Therapy Dog Title - Some organizations require the CGC prior to testing or registering for participation as volunteering as a therapy dog. Others have their own requirements for participation but are registered with AKC as official therapy dog organizations. If you and your dog volunteer with a AKC registered therapy organization, there are five (5) titles you can earn through the AKC, based on the number of visits completed.
10 visits = THDN - AKC Therapy Dog Novice Title.
50 visits = THD - AKC Therapy Dog Title.
100 visits = THDA - AKC Therapy Dog Advanced Title
200 visits = THDX - AKC Therapy Dog Excellent Title.
400 visits = THDD - AKC Therapy Dog Distinguished Title.
